Tate Modern has unveiled the first live commission in The Unilever Series - These associations, created by Anglo-German artist Tino Sehgal. Tino Sehgal has risen to prominence for his innovative works which consist purely of live encounters between people, including work at the 2005 Venice Biennale and solo shows at the Guggenheim and London’s ICA. Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall is inhabited by an assembly of participants whose choreographed actions use movement, sound, and conversation. The Turbine Hall is occupied by the physical and vocal energy of the participants and visitors. The Unilever Series: Tino Sehgal is open until 28 October.
We really enjoyed a couple of conversations with the artists - both thought provoking and entertaining.
Susanne Lacy's video piece of a live performance, The Crystal Quilt, was also a highlight in the newly opened Tank. Filmed over a Mother's day in a Minneapolis Mall, it featured 430 60+ aged women sat at tables arranged in the pattern of the quilt.
Lots of fun to be had in the other live performance area in the Tanks - here you could sing into the mics while your partner stood on the effect pedals .
